Ming's Day 4 - Chengdu

Hi all,

The students are now just off to rooms to pack and get organised for tomorrow. We are at the Ibis Hotel in Ya'an and just enjoyed a hot pot meal.
We have had a fabulous day, starting the morning with a visit to the panda centre where we all pitched in to clean the Panda's living areas and then feed them by hand. Some of the students wee a little squeamish at first - pandas seem to generate a great deal of waste - but they coped really well and did a fine job. We also saw some panda cubs playing and getting up to general mischief.

After lunch we hiked in Bi Feng Gorge. This is a truly beautiful area and we all stopped many times to take photos. After two hours we headed out of the area and made our way to Ya'an.

It has been a fabulous week. The students have had a great time and their behaviour and enthusiasm has been a credit to them,

All going to plan we should have them back at the North Gate tomorrow evening by 10.30pm- looking forward to seeing you all there!

Best wishes

Sally, Ivy and Raymond

Ming's Day 3 - Chengdu China

Hi All,

News of day 3 comes late due to lack of internet access.
Yesterday saw us dividing into groups to do the scavenger hunt and the biking. The scavenger hunt gave the students the chance to see the town of Shangli in th daylight as we had arrived quite late the night before. The biking took us through the beautiful landscaapes of this area and the students relaly enjoyed this activity. It was however very muddy and they will be bringing home some clothes in need of a scrub and a soak!

We have just arrived at the Panda Centre and the students are preparing to look around and do some work with the guides here.

Unfortunately we did have to send a student home yesterday. Imogen Stevens maintained an injury on the biking activity and was picked up later in the evening to take her back to Shanghai.

Will be able to let you know all about day 4 this evening.

Best wishes

Sally, Ivy and Raymond

Ming's Day 2 - Chengdu China

Hi all,

Day 2 has brought many interesting experiences. After a great breakfast we journeyed for about two hours to the village of Shangli. After a traditional Chinese lunch we travelled to a local school where the students were greeted by the students from the school. What was to follow was the distribution of the 1kg extra, the painting of the mural and the leading of games. It had been thought that this would be done with one class, however, all of the students were in attendance, plus the locals from the village......plus the people from the next village as well. So, for all of the activities the students were constantly observed by large quantities of people (at least 500!). They did a fabulous job with all of the activities with special mention of Renee who was fantastic leading the games with the younger students. The final product of the mural was excellent and the donations made filled the shelves.

Following these activities we watched an 'interesting' Lion Dance after which Hannah, Antonia, Ming, Roxane and Magda danced for the ENTIRE crowd while Jennifer and Sophia J sang. They were very well received.

Finally to the Guest House where another traditional Chinese meal was shared. The Guest House is in a lovely setting however Mr. Kentish is struggling with the squat toilet which is a feature of all the rooms!

Another big day tomorrow - everyone is still smiling and many are still laughing very loudly!

Best wishes

Ming's Day 1 - Chengdu China

Dear all,

We arrived safely in Chengdu and were met by the China Climb guides. After a lunch of sandwhiches and pizzas the group went to a local park to do some Tai Chi - they learned about balance and displayed some interesting moves. After that they prepared themselves for the school visit tomorrow where they will paint a mural, lead some games and put on some performances. This is also where the students will make their i kilo extra donations. Dinner in a local restaurant saw the students try (and avoid) some new taste sensations and then it was off to the Opera. This was a fabulous one and a half hour show and the students partiularly enjoyed the shadow puppets.

It was lights out at 10.30 ( we have tried our best!) as tomorrow is a three hour journey to our new destination.

All of the group are well, happy, full of good food and in fine spirits,

Best wishes,

Sally, Ivy and Raymond

PS. Sorry no photos today but the internet itself has been a challenge
